ptg02547983Studies carried out in the West indicate that the incidence of self-harm (SH) is particularly high amongst adolescents, but few studies have investigated its incidence and aetiology in low-income countries. The purpose of this study was to investigate risk factors associated with new onset episodes of SH, amongst Chilean adolescents from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Methods

Prospective cohort study nested within a cluster randomised controlled trial. A 6-month follow-up for 2,042 adolescents, median age 14 years, from socio-economically deprived areas of Santiago, Chile.

Results

The lifetime prevalence of SH was 23 %. The incidence rate of SH at 6 months was 14 % amongst those reporting no SH at baseline. In multivariable analyses, risk factors for incident SH include depressive symptoms, suicidal thoughts, poor problem-solving skills and cannabis misuse.

Conclusions

The prevalence and incidence of SH in this socio-economically deprived sample differed highly according to gender. Poor problem-solving skills, suicidal thoughts, and cannabis misuse were associated with onset of SH.

UntitledThe primary role of the thyroid is to make and release two hormones into our bloodstream. The first hormone is trilodothyronine and the second is ithyroxine, (also called tetraiodothyronine). Given the obscure and difficult-to-pronounce names, you can see why these hormones are more commonly referred to by their abbreviated names of T3 and T4, respectively. Onced released, each of these hormones acts as a messenger. These messengers have the equally important job of communicating with various cells and tissues throughout your body.

The T3 and T4 hormones gather information from each cell in bloodstream, and they use that information to determine whether to increase or decrease the metabolic rate in the body. In addtion to regulating human body metabolism, these hormones also help in other ways. For instance, they help make more efficient use of your body's intake of cholesterol and nutrients, thus ensuring proper brain development, and normal body growth.

There is a third hormone, calcitonin, produced by the thyroid gland. In addition to this third hormone, there are also four smaller glands, called parathyroid glands. These four smaller glands are attached to the larger thyroid gland. The job of calcitonin is to work cooperatively with the smaller parathyroid glands to keep an eye on the calcium and phosphorus levels in the bloodstream, maintaining them appropriately.

spl016838Pregnancy poses an important challenge for doctors looking after women with systemic lupus erythematosus. Knowledge about safety of medications, the effect of pregnancy on such disease, and vice versa, together with multidisciplinary team care, are basic cornerstones needed to provide the best obstetric and medical care to these women.

Pre-conceptional counselling constitutes the ideal scenario where a patient's previous obstetric history, organ damage, disease activity, serological profile and additional medical history can be summarised. Important issues regarding medication adjustment, planned scans and visits, and main risks discussion should also be raised at this stage. Planned pregnancies lead to better outcomes for both mothers and babies. Close surveillance throughout pregnancy and the puerperium, and tailored management approach guarantee the highest rates of successful pregnancies in these women.

spl017130Objectives To determine whether genetic polymorphisms in several candidate genes related to innate immunity and protease–antiprotease balance modify individual susceptibility to develop asbestos-related fibrotic pleuropulmonary changes. Methods Sixteen polymorphisms from nine genes (NLRP3, CARD8, TNF, TGFB1, GC, MMP1, MMP9, MMP12 and TIMP2) were genotyped from 951 Finnish asbestos-exposed workers. The genotype/haplotype data were compared to signs of fibrosis and pleural thickenings using linear and logistic regression analysis adjusted for potential confounders. (more…)

crbs0720805   Clinical hypnosis has been defined as a mind-body therapy that involves a deeply relaxed state, individualized mental imagery, and therapeutic suggestion. Clinical hypnosis has a very long history, with reports of medical application dating back to the 18th century. Some have suggested that there is even evidence for the use of clinical hypnosis since ancient times, with inscriptions of hypnotic-like phenomena on a stone stele from Egypt during the reign of Ramses XII, some 3,000 years ago.

The word hypnosis, derived from the Greek word for sleep, was coined by James Braid in 1841. Clinical hypnosis is a mind-body therapy, one of the fastest-growing and most commonly employed categories of complementary and alternative medicines (CAM), as defined by the NCCAM (National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine) of the National Institutes of Health. A national health interview survey of medical usage in 2007 found that 4 out of 10 US respondents reported having used complementary and alternative medical treatments in the previous year.[1] Further, research suggests that CAM use continues to be highest among those with chronic diseases (eg, cancer).[2,3] Mind-body interventions such as clinical hypnosis are also becoming popular for their ease of integration into an overall cancer survivorship treatment plan with relatively low risks.

hypnosis for painWRMDs and muscle pain affecting the wrists, shoulders, neck and back are common problems for workers in different industries, including the clothing industry, and are caused by ergonomic risks [1,2]. The risks for clothing industry employees' - sewing machine operator's (sewers), cutters, etc., in many cases have been linked with poor workstation design, and organizational factors such as the piecework system. Work monotony and compulsory postures promote fatigue and other work-related health problems. Therefore, the respective muscle group tension is considered to be the main cause of pain. A high occurrence of musculoskeletal complaints among clothing industry employees has been already described by many authors [3-8].

It is known that high work pace, lack of control over work, and insufficient co-workers' support can lead to muscles fatigue and chronic pain in different body parts [9,10]. At the same time it is estimated that 30-54% of chronic pain patients suffer from severe forms of depression caused by stress at work [11]. (more…)

These visionaries included such names as Sigmund Freud and even in today's health care system our very own Minister for Health Dr James Reilly has trained within this field.

Clinical hypnotherapy is nothing to do with stage shows or swinging watches, and was in fact developed by the American Psychiatrist Milton Erickson who used it with great effect for treating clients suffering from a variety of issues in few sessions.
